Intro Global Migration Studies

This interdisciplinary and collaborative course is required for students in the International Migration Studies Minor. Students start their learning through a historical approach examining the broad concepts of migration and movement. This historical contextualization includes colonialism and the world system, providing the necessary backgrounds to delve into the root causes of contemporary local and global human movements. Anthropological and sociological perspectives will familiarize students with the impacts of the global north-south divide, world capitalism, globalization and civil wars. The relationship between migrants and sustainability will be covered next, explaining how environmental issues and human displacements and movements are integral parts of social, political and economic sustainable development. Politics, policies, aims of justice and law enforcement will help understand (re)production of minoritized/vulnerabilized identities and inequalities among migrant groups.
