Prerequisite: PHOE 323 Corequisite: PHOE 420L Student will learn to analyze, measure and apply the mathematical and physical principles involved in the operation and construction of lasers and laser systems. Topics will include absorption, spontaneous and stimulated emission of light, optical amplifiers, optical resonators, pulsed laser, and non-linear optical wave conversion. In laboratory, students will apply these concepts to build small laser systems and characterize their behavior and properties. Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly. Offered alternate years.
