Prerequisite: CRJU 290 This course is focused on mental health in correctional settings. This includes populations institutionalized pretrial for evaluation, state psychiatric hospitals, jails and prisons in the U.S. The course will also cover the social conditions that contribute to mental illness in correctional populations, prevalence of mental illness in correctional settings, treatment and services, barriers to treatment, major court cases impacting correctional services, and how incarceration practices impact persons with mental illness and the U.S. society today.
