Photography II: Analog

Prerequisite: ARTS 104 and ARTS 217; and one studio foundation course (ARTS 125 or ARTS 130 or ARTS 140); or consent of instructor This course introduces students to the historical foundations of analog photography and how they relate to contemporary photographic practice. Working between the analog darkroom and digital technologies, students create handmade artworks using light sensitive processes. Through projects that emphasize conceptual development, visual aesthetics, and technical skills, students learn to create and evaluate their photographs. Students will be exposed to the artworks of historic and contemporary photographers using the methods taught in the course. Students will advance their knowledge of photographic techniques using film as the medium of capture. Technical instruction includes film exposure, development and scanning, the creation of digital negatives and darkroom printing methods. Students may check out a film camera for the course. A gallery/museum visit is assigned. Meets six hours weekly. Offered spring semester. Additional fee required.
