Prerequisite: Matriculation in the MEd or CAGS or postmaster's program in counseling; or consent of instructor This course, which is for the graduate counseling student who intends to work in mental health or PreK-12 settings, and who is seeking licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor, will examine the current trends in the area of ethical and legal issues that affect the professional counselor, as well as the process of ethical decision-making. Legal and ethical issues dealing with informed consent, confidentiality, duty to warn, neglect and abuse, family rights and special education will be among the topics to be studied. Ethical standards of the ACA and codes germane to specific counseling associations will be reviewed and discussed. Guidelines and competencies for working with multicultural and other special populations will also be examined. Offered fall and spring semesters.
