Prerequisite: ENGL 203 and ENGL 234 At the turn of the century, American literature reflects the decline of rural life and the rise of the city. The growth of industry and mechanization led to questions about human nature and democratic values. The consequent human experiences of displacement, alienation and injustice can be seen in the literature from Howells to Wright.
