Prerequisite: Admission to the Professional Education Program This course provides sound knowledge and understanding of the process of special education and the curricular implications for learners with severe special needs. Candidates learn person-centered planning, IEP development, curriculum design using UDL principles and procedures for transition planning. Principles of collaboration for family engagement, management of paraprofessional staff and applying an integrated related services approach are emphasized, enabling students to meet the diverse needs of students in special education. Applications of assistive technologies for learners with severe disabilities are discussed throughout the course. A 20 hour pre-practicum monitored field-based experience is required. Offered fall and spring semester.
