This course examines Islamic art, architecture and urbanism from its formation in the seventh century to the present in the Mediterranean region, the Near East and India. The first part of the course focuses on the creation and development of Islamic imperial artistic tradition in the seventh century and its regionalization through the 14th century. The second half of the course emphasizes the grand imperial traditions of the Ottomans, the Safavids and the Mughals and the subsequent effects of colonialization and Westernization. A museum visit is assigned. Offered fall semester.
