Prerequisite: EDHM 210 and EDHM 235 and admission to the Professional Education Program. EDHM 401 may be taken with one other secondary education course in the program. To emphasize, no more than two secondary education courses may be taken in any one semester. Any override must be signed by the chairperson of Secondary Education. This course focuses on research-based, discipline-specific teaching strategies to help support literacy acquisition in middle and high school content-area courses. Students will investigate disciplinary literacy, including the teaching of reading, writing and digital literacy skills as outlined in the MA Curriculum Frameworks. The intersections between social justice, education and multiple literacies will be explored. Students will read, synthesize and present academic research pertaining to literacy in their discipline. Candidates for teaching careers will continue to develop their professional portfolio. This course requires a minimum of 10 hours of pre-practicum experience in appropriate settings.
