Prerequisite: SPED 567 and SPED 568; or consent of the Graduate Chairperson in Special Education Over half of public school students in the United States have experienced some form of trauma, which is associated with adverse effects on academic performance, behavior and social-emotional development. This course is designed to help educators utilize trauma-informed strategies to create an optimal learning environment that is safe and supportive for students who may have experienced trauma. The course prepares and equips both general and special education teachers to implement evidence-based strategies in the classroom to create meaningful connections with students and support resilient learners. An emphasis will be placed on how CASEL's SEL framework intersects and works in tandem with trauma-informed practices to create a safe and supportive community for all students. Offered fall, spring, summer.
