Prerequisite: ENGL 203 and ENGL 223 This course traces the development of the English novel during the Victorian period (1837-1901), including works by authors such as Dickens, the Brontes, Eliot and Collins. Students will explore the aims and methods of literary realism; representations of childhood, class, gender and sexuality, disability, and race and empire; and the rise of subgenres such as the detective novel. Offered annually.
