The Hannagan group leverages atomic-scale structural information to design more efficient catalysts for sustainable chemical transformations. Reactions of interest include electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction, nitrate reduction, oxygen evolution/reduction, and hydrogen evolution/oxidation, as well as thermal hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and coupling of small hydrocarbons. These studies range from fundamental investigations of well-defined model systems to direct examinations of high-performance industrial devices under operando conditions, enabling a comprehensive understanding of catalyst structure that can inform first-principles design.
