A native of Lake Orion, MI, Spencer Aston has lived in New England for 17 years with his wife and two children. He maintains an active career in the music field as a performer and educator performing with many professional orchestras and teaching at some of the finest institutions in the area. Dr. Aston holds positions at Bridgewater State University where he leads the BSU Bear Band and teaches applied trumpet lessons in addition to serving as the trumpet instructor at Wheaton College. Prior to his appointments at BSU and Wheaton, he served on the faculties at Stonehill College, Saint Anselm College (NH), UMass Boston, Boston University, and the University of New Mexico. Spencer is equally comfortable performing as a member of the ensemble as he is leading the ensemble from the podium. Spencer holds regular positions as principal trumpet in the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra (ME) as well as second trumpet in the Glens Falls Symphony (NY). Other recent orchestral appearances include the Vista Philharmonic Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony, Odyssey Opera, Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, and the Cape Symphony.
As a conductor, he is capable of working across genres leading ensembles in a variety of orchestral or wind band literature. He is currently serving as the Music Director of the Windham Concert Band in Windham, NH and conductor of the Southeastern Massachusetts Youth Orchestra Symphony Orchestra, the youth orchestra of the New Bedford Symphony. Dr. Aston is an active adjudicator and clinician for competitions and educational ensembles. Recent appearances as guest conductor or adjudicator include the MMEA Central District Festival Junior Orchestra, the National Trumpet Competition, the Brookline Symphony Concerto Competition, and the BSU Honor Band Festival.
He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University, a Master of Music degree from the University of New Mexico, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music.
