Title IV Loan Code of Conduct

Bridgewater State University is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency in the administration of federal student financial aid programs. This Code of Conduct outlines the ethical principles and legal requirements governing relationships between the University and student loan lenders, servicers, and related organizations.

Commitment to Students

All decisions regarding student loans are made solely in the best interest of students and their families. The University does not promote or endorse lenders in exchange for financial or other benefits.

Prohibited Practices

To protect students and ensure unbiased guidance, Bridgewater State University prohibits the following:

Revenue-Sharing

The University does not enter into any agreements with lenders that involve sharing revenue or receiving financial benefits in exchange for recommending loan products.

Gifts and Incentives

University employees may not accept gifts, payments, or other items of value from lenders, loan servicers, or guarantors. This includes:

  • Cash or gift cards
  • Meals, entertainment, or travel not associated with a legitimate training event
  • Any form of preferential treatment 

Employee Conduct and Conflicts of Interest

University employees:

  • Must avoid conflicts of interest when working with student loan providers
  • May not receive compensation for consulting or advisory roles with lenders related to student loan programs
  • Must disclose any relationships that could create a perceived conflict of interest 

Preferred Lender Information (If Applicable)

If the University provides information about lenders:

  • It is based on what is best for borrowers
  • Students are never required to use any suggested lender
  • Students may choose any eligible lender without penalty or delay

Loan Processing

Bridgewater State University:

  • Processes all loan applications fairly and without delay
  • Does not discriminate based on lender choice
  • Certifies loans from any eligible lender selected by the borrower

Staffing and Assistance

The University does not accept staffing support from lenders to perform financial aid functions, except in limited emergency situations and with appropriate safeguards.

Transparency and Student Rights

Students have the right to:

  • Clear, accurate, and unbiased information about all financial aid options
  • Choose any lender for their federal or private loans
  • Be informed about federal loan options before considering private loans

Compliance

Bridgewater State University complies with all applicable federal regulations, including the Higher Education Act and related Title IV requirements. Violations of this Code may result in disciplinary action.
