Dr. Quintero Johnson (she/her) brings the lens of a relational mental health professional to her teaching, research, service, and social work practice. She has extensive experience in educational program development and the training and supervision of early career mental health professionals. Dr. Quintero Johnson has developed and taught a variety of courses related to clinical social work practice, mental health and illness, psychodynamic theory and practice, and health communication.
As a health communication scholar, Dr. Quintero Johnson’s research explores how to communicate effectively with diverse audiences about the topics of health, illness, and wellbeing. Her interdisciplinary research projects have explored the social construction of stigma surrounding mental health and illness, the ways in which media representations and discourses perpetuate erroneous information, and the best practices for communicating health information to ameliorate mental health stigma. Dr. Quintero Johnson’s scholarship has published in a variety peer-reviewed journals such as Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Health Communication, Media Psychology, Health Communication, and Women’s Studies in Communication.
Dr. Quintero Johnson is an independently licensed and practicing social worker and her therapy practice with individuals and couples is informed by an anti-oppressive, liberation health lens. She has specialized training in trauma, attachment, emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioral, EMDR, and relational psychodynamic therapy techniques.
