Behind the Name

With a passion for education, a warm heart and a selfless attitude, Jean Stonehouse, ’66, made an indelible impact on Bridgewater State during her many years of teaching.

Her name continues to carry significance on the BSU campus because the university named one of its residence halls after the longtime professor.

The Backstory

A Bridgewater alumna, Stonehouse earned a graduate degree from Boston University. She returned to her alma mater, where she would serve as a history professor for more than 40 years.  

Stonehouse was a frequent commencement speaker and served as president of the Massachusetts State College Association’s chapter at Bridgewater.  

Outside of work, Stonehouse was a lifelong dog owner and a supporter of the Poodle Rescue of New England. She passed away in 2014 after a brief illness.  

Built in 2002, Stonehouse Hall was initially called East Hall. In 2015, BSU renamed it in honor of Stonehouse.  

Use Today

Located on the east side of campus, Stonehouse Hall is a co-ed residence hall housing upper-level students. Its 300 residents and seven resident assistants live in single and double rooms in suite configurations.
