MRISJ offers BSU students the opportunity to build social justice skills and knowledge through civic engagement, direct service and critical reflection. The experience is student-led and explores a variety of social justice issues, and the ways students can take individual and collective action to make advance social justice. Activities will include advocacy, education and service.

What is Alternative Break?

BSU student Team Leaders, along with BSU faculty or staff serving as Learning Partners, work to prepare participants for the week-long experience through a series of pre-trip meetings that include team-building exercises, issue-specific education and critical reflection. The week-long experience has been redesigned to offer more flexibility for students.

This year MRISJ is excited to offer four Alternative Break experiences. Host sites include the Coalition for Social Justice (Southeastern, MA), the Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth and Reconciliation (Selma, AL), program provider AllPeopleBeHappy's Appalachia experience (Williamson, WV) and The Steinbruck Center at Luther Place (Washington, D.C.).

The student Team Leaders, along with faculty and staff serving as Learning Partners, will prepare participants for the week-long experience through a series of pre-trip meetings that include team-building exercises, issue-specific education and critical reflection.

These week-long experiences range from $50-300 with costs offset to be more financially accessible for students. Covering a breadth of social justice topics, these experiences offer exciting options for students from all academic majors and experience levels.
