International Student Teaching

BSU gives students the opportunity to gain an appreciation for diverse cultural perspectives by completing a portion of their student teaching abroad. Students may choose to complete half of the required 16 weeks of student teaching in schools in England, Ireland, Ecuador, Belize, Hong Kong, China and Switzerland, among others. Depending on the site, students may live in university residence halls, a private apartment or the home of a local family. Students complete the remaining eight weeks of teaching at a school in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Innovative Technologies

Our students explore BSU’s leading-edge technology resources, utilizing iPads, Chromebooks and mobile devices in their classes on campus as well in their student teaching. Dr. Stephen Krajeski has introduced many of our students to drones, and the department is exploring the use of virtual reality applications to advance student learning. Additionally, students may use the university’s maker space for hands-on learning and experimentation.

Greenlight for Girls (G4G)

Greenlight for Girls is an international organization dedicated to inspiring girls to pursue STEM-related subjects in their education. BSU assistant professor Dr. Sarah Thomas serves as board member and education chair for G4G, overseeing the strategy and vision for the program in the Americas. Many students serve as mentors and participate in annual events such as “G4G Day,” where 150 local girls between the ages of 11 and 15 participate in hands-on workshops and meet professors and practitioners in STEM fields.

Kappa Delta Phi

Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), the international honor society in education, was founded in 1911 to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. Many BSU Secondary Education students are represented among the new inductees each year.

The Light Foundation

Founded by former New England Patriots player Matt Light, the Light Foundation strives to instill the values of responsibility, accountability and hard work in local youth through unique learning experiences. BSU hosts the Light Foundation’s Leadership Conference for high school students from Brockton, Fall River and New Bedford, and many BSU students from the department volunteer as organizers and mentors.
