How the Bridgewater Fund Helps Students Succeed

A MEDITECH scholarship is easing financial strain for a first-generation computer science major

To save money, Jason Gonatas, ’27, made a practical decision: live on campus at Bridgewater State University and skip the cost of a car.

To make that choice work, he balances multiple jobs while pursuing a degree in computer science.

The Plainville native, a first-generation student, works as a lab technician, newspaper editor, and writing fellow to make ends meet while working toward a degree in computer science.

“Paying for college has been tough,” Jason admits.

To relieve some of the pressure, he applied for and was granted a MEDITECH scholarship through the Bridgewater Fund, and it has made all the difference. Now he can focus more on his classes and education.

“This aid helps greatly in allowing me to focus on succeeding in academics rather than stressing about affording university expenses,” Jason said. “Thanks to this generous scholarship, I am able to focus on organizing and preparation over worrying about financial concerns.”

Chief Development Officer and Executive Director of the BSU Foundation Ellen Cuttle Oliver, ’82, ’89, said partnerships like the one BSU has with MEDITECH are “exceptionally valuable.”

“They create meaningful career pathways that give students the professional momentum they have worked so hard to build,” she said. “It reinforces what’s possible for their own future.”

This Giving Day, April 1-2, those looking to help students like Jason reach their goals can make a gift to the Bridgewater Fund to support BSU students’ most urgent needs.

The Bridgewater Fund provides critical support to BSU students through scholarships, paid internships, and other life-changing experiences and opportunities.

“When companies and individual donors choose to support the Bridgewater Fund, their philanthropy has a direct and lasting impact,” said Elizabeth Dubque, executive director of Alumni and Development. “This support sends a powerful message of confidence that reminds our students that others believe in their potential.”

Jason can confirm that financial support like the MEDITECH scholarship helps level the playing field and sheds light on those who might otherwise be left in the dark.

“Knowing that my efforts and hard work is being noticed is extremely inspirational and helps when dealing with obstacles that can seem impossible,” Jason said.

He is filled with gratitude for those able to donate to the BSU Fund.

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who have trouble affording education and as a result, they never get the chance to learn,” he said. “Through financial support, everyone can be given an equal opportunity to learn new things and succeed in the world.”
