The Science Academy offers one-week science classes for students who are in or are entering grades 2-12. This unique program allows students to work as scientists and is designed to inspire students about science while providing them with the foundations necessary for further scientific exploration.

Forensics Institute of Bridgewater

As a new employee at the Forensics Institute of Bridgewater (FIB), you expect your intensive training on crime scene investigations to be exciting, but you never thought it would be THIS exciting. While training on the various crime lab biotechnology techniques, a live case is delivered and F.I.B. needs YOU to help determine what happened!

Have you ever watched Crime Scene Investigators and wondered what really happens to the evidence at a crime scene and how that evidence is used to solve the crime? Join us in a week-long adventure into the life of a crime scene analyst!  Working with Senior Scientists, you will learn how to collect and analyze fingerprints from a simulated crime scene, perform blood type analysis and get closer to solving the mystery using  DNA fingerprinting.

Scholarships:  A limited number of scholarships are available to students who demonstrate academic merit and significant financial need. Additional information about scholarships can be found on our scholarship page.

Fee: The program fee of $275 is due at the time of registration and covers all class expenses including lab supplies and materials. The fee does not include lunch or transportation. The registration deadline is one month prior to the start of the course. Seats are limited and filled on a rolling basis. We reserve the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment. A limited number of seats are reserved at a discounted rate for children of BSU faculty and staff.

Deadlines: The program registration deadline is February 3, 2020. All necessary paperwork, including health forms, due by February 6, 2020.

Note: Participants are not able to attend a class if they attended it previously. Winter Science Academy participants must currently be in grades 6-8. You will be receive an email regarding all necessary paperwork.

Refund Policy

Full payment is due at the time of registration.
  • A refund, minus a $50 administrative cancellation fee, will be issued if written cancellation is received more than one month prior to the start of the course.
  • A 50% refund, minus a $50 administrative cancellation fee, will be issued if written cancellation is received less than one month but more than two weeks prior to the start of the course.
  • There will be no refund issued in the event of cancellation within two weeks of the start of the course.
  • For the Winter Science Academy only: In the case of inclement weather, a refund will be issued at a per diem rate of $68.75

Inclement Weather Policy

In cases of inclement weather or emergency, The Center for the Advancement of STEM Education follows Bridgewater State University's inclement weather policy. If the university closes due to weather, or any other reason, our program closes as well. For the most up to date weather-related closure information, refer to the BSU homepage. Learning Science Through Play 

The Center for the Advancement of STEM Education (CASE) in collaboration with the Elementary & Early Childhood Education Department are pleased to offer a virtual April-break Science Academy for 4th and 5th grade students. The class, Learning Science Through Play is funded by a grant from the Office of University and Community Initiatives, and will be taught by graduate students from the BSU College of Education and will be supervised by BSU faculty.  

Join us as we incorporate play into problem solving and increase your interest in science and engineering!

Dates: April 20 - April 23, 2021
Time: Class will meet virtually from 9:00 - 10:00 AM daily. Additional at-home activities will be assigned each day.  
Supplies: Supply kits will be provided. Kits will be available via contact-less pick up Thursday, April 15th, 5:00-6:30 PM, or Monday, April 19th  9:00 - 10:00 AM.  
Fee: A refundable $30 deposit is required at the time of registration. This deposit will be refunded on the last day after your child has attended all four days of the program.

Nature’s Engineers Registration is Now Closed

Did you know that every living thing has been specifically designed by nature to help it survive?
We can learn a lot from closely examining the time-tested patterns, features, and strategies of
the living organisms around us.  In this course, you will become one of Nature’s Engineers by
observing these elements of nature and using them to design products and processes useful for
people.

Nature's Engineers

Grades:  For students entering grades 2 and 3 only.

Time:  Class will meet on Zoom from 9:00 - 10:00 AM daily.  Additional at-home activities will be assigned each day.  
Supplies:  Your child will need a notebook and a pencil for the course, supplied by you.  Other
general household items and/or natural items found outside may be needed as indicated by the
teachers during the class.

Space Explorers Registration is Now Closed

The universe is a fascinating place!  Explore the stars, planets, moons, and other objects in our solar system and beyond.  Learn more about what it is like to be an astronaut, astronomer, and aerospace engineer.  In this class, you will become a Space Explorer by observing and analyzing data from simulations, telescopes, and real missions to space.

The Summer Science Academy is offering an online environmental science class for students entering grades 5 to 7 this fall.  This interactive class will include videos, instructions, outdoor activities and daily online “meet ups” with the instructor and other participants.  We hope you will join us!.

Outdoor Environmental Adventures Registration is Now Closed

Do you enjoy the great outdoors?  Do you love exploring the environment around you?  Then, this is the summer class for you.  Each day you will watch a brief informational video about a topic in environmental science.  You will then receive instructions to complete an indoor or outdoor project, and head outdoors to explore and perform activities.  You may be asked to explore an area wetland and discover how the soil works.  You may be tasked with identifying organisms utilizing smartphone technology.  You may even be asked to discover what is impacting the natural world around you using Google Earth.  After your exploration, we will “meet up” online each day, to discuss any challenges and what new information is discovered. Each day will be a new adventure.

Please note:  In order to participate, students will need to have access to a wetland area (pond, stream, lake, river, etc.) each day.  During the time in the field, students will require access to a smartphone or other device capable of opening an app and taking pictures.  Students will also need access from home to the internet in order to join us each day for our interactive online Zoom meetings.  Parents or guardians are required to monitor outdoor activities and consider safety concerns such as exposure to sun, sunburn, and possible exposure to bee stings, insect bites, poison ivy, oak, sumac or other allergens.

Conduct that is disruptive in the online environment, or in violation of the rights of others, including, but not limited to, hazing, bullying, verbal harassment, intimidation and bias in any manner or media, will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action, which may include: a warning, consultation with parent/guardian, or in cases of serious or repeated behavioral problems, dismissal from the program as determined in the sole discretion of the University.  Should a participant be dismissed from the program for any reason, tuition or any other program-related expenses will not be refunded.  Parents or guardians are required to monitor outdoor activities - especially around lakes, ponds or streams - and consider safety concerns such as exposure to sun, sunburn. and possible exposure to bee stings, insect bites, poison ivy, oak and sumac.
